The Washington State men's golf team is in the midst of preparation for the nearing start of the 2012 fall season.
Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg, in his second season at WSU, will kick off the year by hosting the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash., Sept. 10-11. This is the fourth year WSU has hosted a fall event at Palouse Ridge.
The Cougar men look forward to the return of Hank Frame, the lone senior on WSU's squad. Frame competed in the Lilac City Invitational in Cheney, Wash., in July, where he rallied from three strokes back in the final round to become the third amateur in the 49th annual event to take the tournament title. Frame finished amidst the top 25 players in five tournaments last season for WSU, and in the top 10 twice.
The men's golf team also welcomes back Michael Anderson, a sophomore from Phoenix. Anderson competed in the Pacific Coast Amateur in July, losing in a five-way playoff for the tournament title. He set a course record (66) in the third round of the Amateur. Anderson also carded a 7-under 65 in the first round of the ReBath Snowman Getaway last spring, tying for second all-time on the Cougar freshman and school record list for best round.
Juniors Jarrett Foote, Kent Hagen, and Kyle Hurt will be donning crimson and gray again for the men's golf team this fall. Foote qualified for the U.S. Amateur in August, where the top 312 amateurs from around the world competed. He carded a 148 in the Amateur to finish in the upper half of the event. Hagen, who competed in nine of eleven tournaments for the Cougars, and Hurt, who competed in three, each placed in the top 25 of tournament fields twice last season.
Alex Wagner and Sang Lee join Anderson as sophomores on the men's team. Lee made his debut as a redshirt freshman for the Cougars last year and competed in six events. Wagner competed in three tournaments last year and cracked the top 25 in one of them.Ryan Books, Blake Snyder, Bhurinat Songpaiboon, and Sam Mendez join the WSU men's golf squad as newcomers this season.Mendez, a walk-on, was added to the roster by coach Clegg last week. Songpaiboon comes to WSU from Thailand. He was the number one junior golfer in his homeland for the 2007-08 and 2009-10 seasons. He finished fourth in the Taiwan Amateur Open in 2011. Snyder, a transfer from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, competed in the NCAA Division II National Championship in his first year out of high school. Books will come to WSU from Seattle Preparatory. He placed top 10 in the state for the Washington Junior Golf Association while in high school.
The WSU men's golf team has 12 events scheduled for the 2012-13 season, five of which will take place during the fall. In addition to the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate, the Cougars will host the Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Ariz., Feb. 25-26, 2013. The men's NCAA Regionals are also set to take place at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman in May 2013.
